An End to Remote Work?
In her article entitled, “The Unspoken Reasons Employees Don’t Want Remote Work to End,” writer Gwen Moran highlights not only the more obvious reasons, including increased productivity and more free time, but also some of the more deeply personal reasons behind why many employees are trying to hold onto their remote work setting for as long as possible. Moran interviewed employees from different industries, many of whom used pseudonyms to protect their identities. In doing so she uncovered a variety of factors such as, personal health issues that the employee did not feel comfortable sharing with her boss, a previous 20+ hour a week commute that the employee did not want to return to, a side job that allows the employee to earn extra money while also getting her daily work responsibilities met, and an employee who has a substance abuse problem that is under wraps by working remote. The employees interviewed for this article are not alone. “An April 2021 survey by FlexJobs found that 60% of women and 52% of men would quit if they weren’t allowed to continue working remotely at least part of the time.”
