Summer Safety Tips to Keep your Employees’ Safe

The Summer season is coming to an end, but employers should always be thinking of ways to keep their employees safe. Nonetheless, climate change is causing these summer months to last longer and longer. In Jeff Corder’s article, “Summer safety tips to avoid work injuries”, he states a few helpful tips for employers regarding heat-related illness, young and seasonal worker injuries, traveling abroad, and safe clean up from storms or wildfires. The first topic of his discussion is heat related injuries. Corder mentions heat stroke is one of the more common issues with outdoor workers in non-air-conditioned spaces. Some of the tips that Corder mentions are to gradually increase your employees’ exposure to the high temperatures, have plenty of water provided, ensure loose fitting uniforms and work gear, schedule breaks, schedule work earlier in the day, and provide shade to your employees.  For seasonal and younger workers, requiring safety training programs can significantly reduce the number of accidents and injuries, and ensure a safe working environment. Traveling abroad, whether for personal or work-related reasons, pose their own threats, according to Corder. Making sure the drinking water is safe, knowing the disease exposures you may come across depending on the area of travel, like Malaria, and receiving the proper vaccinations can reduce the risk of illness. Corder also talks about the precautions employers can take when it comes to storms and wildfires, which are common during the summer months. He states that employers can develop emergency plans, secure buildings, ensure proper ventilation, watch weather reports, and ensure employees involved in clean up understand the dangers, and practice safe clean up techniques with the proper gear.
